What's even more fun than a power drill?

Many tell me the jigsaw is their favorite tool, even replacing other saws completely.

Whether for demolition or fine artwork, daily or occasional use, the modern jigsaw makes magic happen like nothing else. They're not so great for really thick materials as the blade can over-heat but if the job involves cutting then 9 times out of 10 the right tool for the job is your jigsaw.

Regardless of it you're just starting to use a jigsaw or if you've jigged up hundred of hours, it's best to know about the most important bit, the blade.

The good news is that all of them are pretty affordable compared to most disposable items and it's worth spending a few pennies extra because quality jigsaw blades make your work so much easier. The right blade will also give you a cleaner cut on different materials.

What's the difference?
Generally it's pretty much impossible to tell if a jigsaw blade is good quality or not until you actually use it.
Things to watch for are flexing and wobbles, poor tooth design that jams up a lot and of course wearing out quickly.
As such most tradesmen reach for our high quality Terrasaw blades, or if they haven't discovered us yet, the better-known Bosch.

Safety
The great news about jigsaw blades is that while they certainly can snap or split this is really quite rare unless you're using the wrong blade for the job. Some fle-market imports that don't meet British Standards or seriously abusing the blade are another matter.

Jigsaw blades rarely get to bite human flesh and jigsaws have a much lower accident rate than rotary saws or other power tools. This is quite likely to be because they look dangerous and few people forget how close to their precious groin is an open blade buzzing at 3000 strokes per minute.

Find the blade you love
The thinner the blade the easier it is to make tight turns but the more likely it is to wobble.
For each material it's best to find a brand you're really comfortable with and use it all the time rather than changing over.
Even for really tight circular shaping - here do some relief cuts, like wheel spokes, then do the rounding through them in one smooth action with your favorite blade.

Wood Cutting Jigsaw Blades
The usual choice for wood is High Speed Steel (HSS) or bi-metal ( stainless with cobalt).
Typically these blades cut only on the upward motion, meaning it's best to cut from behind on cosmetic finishes or laminate to avoid visible tearing.

Blades that can cut in both directions are referred to as reciprocating. Note though that any form of jigsaw blade is often incorrectly referred to as "reciprocating" simply because they go back and forth.

Oscillation/Orbit Action
Although it works with all blades and materials this is most commonly used with wood.
By moving perpendicular to the cutting motion, the orbit action allows the teeth to self-clean and makes for much quicker cuts.
This is a feature of the jigsaw, not the blade and this feature should be turned off for thinner cuts and finer work, though some tradesmen tell me the opposite!

Don't confuse orbital with spiral. The spiral type of blade is designed to cut in any direction and usually reserved for rough cutting of very soft materials such as plaster.

Wood cutting jigsaw blades are also suitable for chipboard, plastics, fiber glass or similar soft materials.

Metal Cutting Jigsaw Blades
HSS will work if you have a high tooth per inch (TPI) and light metal such as aluminum but if you're cutting a lot or anything heavier then carbon-tipped (tungsten carbide) is the blade of choice.

These are also suitable for ceramics, roof tiles or slate, brick and masonry but for heavier duty work on the hard stuff you need:

Carbide Grit
As the name implies these jigsaw blades don't have teeth as such but grind their way through really tough stuff such as embedded nails, stone and similar materials.

Using a wood cutting blade here would produce more broken teeth than a street fight between Woody Allen and Mike Tyson.

If you already know the size and fitting you need then you can order directly from the website 24/7.
All our jigsaw blades are top-end quality, there's no budget range but when you see our prices I know you'll be happy anyway.
